from drawing the figure in full size, I learned how to make better proportions. I found it difficult at first to get an accurate shape for the person. after a while I redid a lot of the lines so that it looked more realistic. what I should have done is made it like a gestured drawing and then add the details and shapes. instead I just did an outline and filled it in. the piece would have been more successful if I'd done a gesture drawing first.
this was a unique task to accomplish because I've never done a drawing that was this large. drawing full size takes a lot more planning and skill, but you can also make a lot more small details. sometimes in a small drawing there isn't enough room to make proper shading and gradient.
Charcoal was a fun medium because you can put down a lot of dark color in just a little bit of time. it can also blend very easily so it lets you go back over mistakes and wipe them off, or create smooth gradients. pencil would not have been good since we were doing this against a rough brick wall and we would have had to press harder.
